To appear when someone in Mumbai searches for what you do, claim and verify your free Google Business Profile, fill in every field honestly, add real photos, collect reviews steadily and reply to them, and make sure your website shows the same name, address and phone number. That gets you into the map results that sit above the normal links. It takes a few weeks to show results, costs nothing, and matters more than any paid "SEO package" for a local business.
What is the map pack, and why does it matter?
Search "physiotherapist near me" or "CA in Borivali" on your phone and the first thing you see, under the ads, is a map with three businesses, their ratings, hours and a Call button. That block is the map pack, and it is where most calls to local businesses come from. The businesses in it are not there because they paid; they are there because their Google Business Profile is complete, close to the searcher and trusted. The ordinary website links come below.
Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that feeds the map pack and the panel that appears when someone searches your business name. If you have ever seen your shop on Google Maps with wrong timings, that is the profile, unclaimed.
How do I set up a Google Business Profile, step by step?
- Search for your business on Google Maps. If it already exists, click "Claim this business" or "Own this business?". If not, go to business.google.com and add it.
- Use your real business name. "Sharma Dental Clinic", not "Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Andheri West". Stuffing keywords into the name is against the rules and gets profiles suspended.
- Choose the right primary category. This matters more than anything else on the profile. Pick the most specific one that describes what you mainly do, then add secondary categories.
- Address or service area. A shop or clinic enters its address. A plumber, tutor or caterer who visits customers hides the address and sets a service area, such as Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
- Verify. Google will ask for a video walk-through of the premises, a postcard, a phone call or an email, depending on the business. In India, video verification is now common: you film the signboard, the inside, and something proving you run the place. Do it carefully; failed verification is slow to fix.
- Fill in everything. Hours, including special hours for festivals. Phone number. Website link. A description in plain words about what you do and for whom. Services or products with prices if you are comfortable sharing them. Booking or WhatsApp links where available.
- Add photos. The outside of your shop so people recognise it, the inside, your team, your work. Real photos taken on a phone beat stock images. Add a few new ones every month.
What makes Google choose one business over another?
Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance (does your profile match what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed you are, on Google and elsewhere). You cannot change distance. You control relevance by picking the right categories, listing your services and describing what you do in the words customers use. You build prominence with reviews, with mentions on other sites, and with a website that Google trusts.
How do I get reviews without being spammy?
- Ask at the right moment. After a good visit, a delivered order or a solved problem. "If you have a minute, a Google review helps us a lot" is enough.
- Make it one tap. Google gives you a short review link. Put it in a WhatsApp message, on a small card at the counter, or as a QR code on the bill.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and briefly. Replies show future customers you are paying attention, and Google notices activity.
- Keep it steady. Two reviews a week for a year beats a hundred in one weekend, which looks bought.
- Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them. Google removes them, and sometimes the profile.
What should my website do to help?
The profile and the website work together. Google checks that they agree. The website should:
- Show the same name, address and phone number as the profile, written the same way, on every page, usually in the footer.
- Say where you are in the page titles and text: "Physiotherapy clinic in Chembur", not just "Welcome".
- Have a page for each main service so Google can match specific searches, and a contact page with a map.
- Load fast on a phone and work without pinching and zooming. Most local searches in India happen on a phone.
- Include local business structured data, a small block of code that tells Google your business type, address, hours and area served. Your developer should add this; it is standard.
- Be linked from the profile, and link back to the profile from the contact page.
Every site I build includes this: see website design in Mumbai. If your current site is slow, not mobile-friendly or has a different phone number from your listing, fixing that is the first job.
How long does it take?
Verification takes a few days to a couple of weeks. After that, a complete profile with a few reviews can appear in the map pack for searches close to you within weeks. Climbing for broader searches like "web designer Mumbai" across the whole city takes months of reviews and content, and anyone promising page one in a week is selling something else. Keep the profile active: post an update or a photo now and then, answer the questions people leave, and keep hours current.
What are the common mistakes?
- Keywords in the business name.
- A fake or virtual office address to appear in a different area. Google suspends these.
- A different phone number on the website, the profile and Justdial. Pick one and use it everywhere.
- Two profiles for the same business, often one created by an old employee. Merge or remove duplicates.
- Ignoring the Q&A section, where anyone can post a question and anyone can answer it, wrongly.
- Hours never updated, so the listing says "Open" on a holiday and someone turns up.
If you want the website side of this done properly, or you are not sure what your current site is missing, tell me about your business below and I will send a short, honest list of what to fix. For what the site itself should cost, read how much a website costs in Mumbai.
Common questions
Is Google Business Profile free?
Yes, completely. Anyone charging you a monthly fee to "maintain your Google listing" is charging for the work of updating it, which you can do yourself in a few minutes a week.
I do not have a shop. Can I still have a profile?
Yes. Businesses that visit customers, such as tutors, plumbers, caterers and consultants, set a service area instead of an address. Freelancers working from home do the same.
Why has my profile been suspended?
Usually a name with keywords, an address that is not a real business location, or a category that does not match. Fix the issue, then request reinstatement from the profile dashboard.
Do I need a website to show up on Google Maps?
No, but it helps. A profile with a fast, matching website ranks better than one without, and the website is where people go when they want more than a phone number.
Does my Justdial or Sulekha listing matter?
A little, as long as the details match your Google profile exactly. Mismatched phone numbers across directories hurt more than the listings help.
